About Sailing in greece
There’s something special about a sailing holiday in the Greek islands, and it’s no wonder Greece is one of the worlds most popular yachting and dinghy sailing destinations. Nearly 3,000 islands offer incredible diversity, unrivalled beauty, cultural heritage and competitive prices.
The most popular sailing areas are the Ionian Sea, the Cyclades, the Saronic Gulf, the Dodecanese and the Sporades. The Ionian Sea and the Saronic Gulf are perfect for beginners or a more leisurely holiday, whereas the Cyclades are better suited to experienced sailors in spring or autumn due to the frequent stronger winds, especially in the summer months.
As with other Mediterranean countries the Greek sailing season begins in April and generally lasts until the end of October. During the busy peak season of July and August expect bustling marinas and ports, day-tripper motorboats and that happy holiday vibe. It’s the perfect time of year to explore the multitude of lesser known harbours and hidden bays for those precious and peaceful nights at anchor. Out of high season these incredible Greek islands really shine and there’s no better way to explore than by sea on a private yacht or with a dinghy sailing holiday.
The Ionian Islands
Kefalonia and the Ionian islands are without a doubt one of the best sailing and yacht cruising destinations in the world . Perfect breezes, crystal clear waters, dramatic scenery and a wonderful laid back atmosphere. Perfect for families, friends and singles looking for some sunshine and happy sailing. As a sailing holiday destination it’s quick and easy to get to, with very reasonable flight prices and departure airport options compared with the other locations.
A sailing holiday gives you such close contact with the sea and so much flexibility – you can plan your route as you wish, going from island to island, stopping at whim to put down anchor for a swim or mooring up in a harbour to step ashore for a meal.
Easy itineraries and the sheltered waters of the southern Ionian islands of Greece are the perfect destination for yacht sailors looking for a more relaxed sailing holiday. The distance between one port and the next is never more than a few miles and there’s always a sheltered anchorage en-route for a spot of lunch and dip in the sea. We sail mainly around Kefalonia, a beautiful island with some wonderful beaches and coastline. Perfect sea breezes, crystal clear waters and stunning scenery make this island an ideal sailing spot and the perfect base to explore Ithaka, Lefkada, Kalamos, Kastos and Meganissi. They are all incredibly beautiful islands – not mega-marinas, but quaint Greek fishing harbours that are full of character.il
