Walking Holidays in Greece, Kefalonia

Guided Walking Week: Sept 25th – 29th
We do love our sailing holidays but we also like to get out and about on foot once in a while. Get your boots on, grab the walking sticks and join us for a guided walking holiday in Kefalonia this September!
With its amazing scenery, Kefalonia is a great place to explore on foot. There’s a nice mixture of countryside tracks and coastal paths, interspersed with olive groves and vineyards, monasteries, ruins and of course stunning beaches. After a couple of hours walking, there is nothing nicer than a cool-off dip in the Ionian sea.
Our walking holidays are not hardcore in any way, but with the occasional short, sharp incline a good level of fitness is certainly beneficial. With our knowledge of the island, we have put together a nice, varied itinerary which will allow you to see much of the island. Your accommodation will be at our comfortable family-run Hotel Lixouri Bay Beach Club, and we’ll provide transfers to different parts of the island on each walking day.
DAY 1 – GUIDED WALKING
Some of our walks take on historical and cultural aspects. Our first walk looks to retrace the steps of the Greek hero Odysseus, who it is contested actually landed on Kefalonia rather than Ithaca. The walk takes in the final part of his journey from Atheras Bay after he arrived back to the island after many years of sailing home.
Day 2 – GUIDED WALKING
The second day starts at the North of the island and follows the coastal tracks around the fishing village of Fiscardo. The walk combines dramatic cliffs and an abundance of wild flora. We end the walk in the village, where you will have time to visit the shops or simply relax in one of the many cafes.
DAY 3 – GUIDED WALKING
The third day begins with a steady climb to the highest village in Kefalonia, Kaminarata. It’s a very pretty village with many of the houses perched on the edge of the hill, offering views of Lixouri and beyond. We then head to Rifi, one of Kefalonia’s oldest villages. You’ll see many original Venetian houses here. This takes us towards the western coastline, which has a rugged natural beauty and wild landscape.
Our day will finish with a drive down to the gorgeous Petani Beach. This is possibly one of the most beautiful looking beaches on Kefalonia. Relax on the beach and enjoy a swim before the short drive back to the Hotel.
Day 4 – A relaxing day not walking
There’s a break from walking on Day 4, but that doesn’t have to stop you from exploring. We are happy to arrange a hire car, or else the ferry from Lixouri town is only a short hop across the gulf so you can explore Kefalonia’s main town, Argostoli.
For 2019 our day yacht is also available for charter. Enjoy sailing around the Gulf of Argostoli and perhaps stop off for a swim and a picnic lunch at a secluded beach.
If you would prefer to relax by the pool with a good book, then we’re happy just to leave you to it for the day!
DAY 5 – GUIDED WALKING
Today we head for Mount Aenos, Kefalonia’s highest mountain and a National Park. We drive the majority of the way to the top before taking a circular walking route around the summit. The slopes are alive with wildlife, so there is plenty to see. On the clearest of days, the views from the top stretch as far away as Corfu, which is over 90 miles north-west of Kefalonia.
DAY 6 – GUIDED WALKING
Our final day starts with a stroll along the coast from Karavamilos to the seaport of Sami. We then head for the foothills of Agia Fanentes. Lunch will be beside the ruins of the ancient citadel that once stood on the hillside. You’ll enjoy some brilliant views over lunch. The second part of the walk leads us down the opposite side of Agia Fanentes hill to the ancient city of ‘Same’. After walking back down to the modern town of Sami, you’ll be able to explore the town. On our return to Lixouri, there will hopefully have time visit the Drogati Caves. These are a stunning natural cave structure full of stalactites and stalagmites – definitely well worth seeing!
Our guided walking holidays are in May and September as these months provide a daytime temperature more comfortable to walk in then the main summer months. The consistent daily winds that guests enjoy down at the beach clubs for sailing also provide a refreshing breeze, perfect for when you’re walking.
Who are the holidays for?
Our walking weeks are open to anyone. We’ve previously welcomed singles, couples, groups, youngsters and oldies. The group sizes are limited to roughly 12 guests for the week, allowing you to socialise and get to know your fellow walkers throughout your holiday. If you fancy a guided walking holiday with us, please get in touch.
