Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands in western Greece, made famous as the setting for the film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. It boasts the third highest mountain range in Greece, underground lakes, sublime beaches and incredible local food and wine.
Kefalonia has had a turbulent history. The island was occupied by the Byzantines, Turks, Venetians and British to name but a few. During World War II, Kefalonia was occupied by the Axis powers, primarily Italy.
hike or bike- the national park @ 1628m
Mt Aenos is great for walking and cycling as it’s a designated National Park. Walking and cycling routes wind their way up both sides of the mountain. The indigenous black-pine trees blanket the steep slopes and provide welcome shade during the hot summer months.
Hiking or cycling to the top is not an option for the faint-hearted though, particularly in the middle of summer when temperatures can soar, however at altitude, it’s often remarkably cool. Those up for the challenge will be rewarded with stunning views from the top, sometimes even Corfu island to the North is clearly visible.
You can, of course, grab a car and drive to the top if you fancy a more leisurely day out. There are some fabulous well-marked hiking trails that traverse the summit. These vary between 2km and 6km in length and are easy to moderate gradients.
We now have bike hire available at both our beach clubs in co-operation with our local partners Rent-a-bike Kefalonia. They offer a range of different bikes including e-bikes, road bikes and mountain bikes, all at competitive prices.
wild swim – Petani Beach
Petani Beach, is in our opinion, the most beautiful beach on the island. Located on the western side of the Paliki peninsular and only 15 minutes from our fabulous Lixouri Bay beach club it’s a great place to visit. It has a large sandy and pebble beach with the most incredible aqua-blue water you will ever see.
The ideal time to go is early afternoon. Explore the coastline and work off some of those calories with a fantastic wild swim, and still have time to enjoy a traditional meal at one of the brilliant beachside tavernas. Finish off with an Espresso Martini and enjoy the stunning sunset at this dramatic west coast location.
A COASTAL RAMBLE – Fiskardo
Before tarmac roads were built, a vital network of donkey tracks and footpaths linked the villages and hamlets of Kefalonia. The good news is that with the generous help of a local donor and a lot of hard work from village volunteers, many of these pathways have been cleared and re-opened. These reclaimed footpaths provide a multitude of walking opportunities – all in an area of unsurpassed natural beauty.
The Venetian Lighthouse Walk, in the beautiful harbour of Fiscardo is an easy 30-40 min ramble through the pine trees. There are lovely views of the Ithaca channel and an opportunity for a sea swim from the flat rocks en-route. Grab a bite to eat on the harbour front and enjoy the cosmopolitan atmosphere Fiscardo is renowned for.
ski boats and mojitos – XI Beach
Only a short 5-minute taxi ride from our active beach clubs lies the famous red sand of Xi Beach, which has a party vibe and attracts a hip clientele looking to hang out and be seen. Cool tunes, beach bars, mojitos and ski boats are where it’s at here. Water skiing, wakeboarding and inflatable toys are all available to hire throughout the day.
It’s also worth noting that the local seabed clay is said to be an organic skin care remedy. It’s a natural way to keep yourself looking fresh, so long as you’re prepared to plaster yourself in it and doze in the sun like a lizard for a few hours.
West coast by motorboat – Vatsa
If you’re looking for a bit of peace and quiet consider spending the day on the famous golden sands of Platia Ammos. A fabulous deserted west coast beach which can only be reached by boat. Motorboats can be rented from Vatsa taverna for a half or full day afloat.
It’s a brilliant day out on the water and the perfect way to discover this west coast gem. At the end of the day, tuck into some grilled fish and an ice cold beer at Spiros’ beachside taverna – a local favourite and only a 15 min taxi drive from our beach clubs.
discover scuba – ag.efimia
Diving in Kefalonia is a magical experience, with crystal clear water and incredible visibility up to 40m. Glide through the warm water and discover a range of aquatic flora and fauna. There are also several archaeological and historical souvenirs, shipwrecks and pottery – all to be discovered.
Dives are available for beginners and experts. Usually a half day out and a 35 min taxi ride from our beach clubs.
