Flotilla sailing and charter in Kefalonia, Greece | Prices from £355
A Flotilla Sailing Holiday in Greece or a Yacht Charter from our base in Ag. Efimia on Kefalonia is a fantastic way to explore the incredibly beautiful Ionian islands. Fair winds and short sailing distances make it ideal for those seeking a more relaxed sailing holiday with countless inlets, bays and harbours to visit. Flotilla holidays are increasingly becoming a popular sailing holiday choice for those looking for a little bit of support along the way.
Unlike many other flotilla operators we are not an agent and own and run all our yachts and lead crew. Our well maintained fleet of modern yachts are ready to set sail further afield and discover the nearby Ionian islands of Ithaki, Lefkas and Meganisi to name but a few.
You’re free to plot your own course and itinerary, so you can arrive when you like at each new destination, making the most of the best sailing conditions. The flotilla skipper is on hand to give you advice and support – particularly with that parking bit !
Enjoy the support of a helpful lead boat and a few other yachts for company as a small flexible flotilla, or explore independently as yacht charter with our renowned first class back up.
Our yacht base in Ag. Efimia is the perfect starting point to explore the wonderful Southern Ionian islands. It’s a lovely little harbour with excellent facilities, a perfect place to prepare for a weeks sailing ahead. Sheltered sailing and an easy itinerary with short island-hopping distances make this cruising area perfect for those looking for a less demanding sailing holiday. An abundance of stunning clear water inlets, protected bays to anchor in and quaint harbour towns to explore. Ithaki, Lefkas, Kalamos and Kastos are a few of the islands usually en route.
how to get there
There’s a good choice of airlines that fly to Kefalonia (EFL) from the UK on most days of the week from early April to end of October. Check our Sailing Flight checker further down the page for all your options.
Once you arrive it’s only a 45 min transfer from Kefalonia airport to the habour, so it’s quick and easy to get to.
Sea-Trek Yacht Base
Our yacht sailing holidays take place from early May until the middle of October. Tuesday arrivals.
On a flotilla holiday, each day there will be a morning briefing from the lead skipper who will highlight the proposed route with various options along the way. The day is then yours to sail and meander from cove to cove. Moor up for a swim and a bite to eat, then hoist the sails for an exciting passage to your evening destination in the brisk afternoon breeze. The lead boat will be there to help moor you up and offer any support along the way.
A yacht charter is much the same as above but without the support of a lead skipper and the daily briefings, leaving you free to set sail and decide where you’re headed. We do of course provide daily support, weather updates and advice on the complimentary yacht phone.
Please see below an example itinerary (weather dependent).
day 1 – arrival day
Transfer time from the airport to our yacht base in Ag.Efimia is about 1hr15 mins. Our yachts are ready for boarding after 3pm on Tuesdays. You’ll be met by our local staff on the quayside. After a short briefing about living on board, safety and the local town we leave you to relax and sort your things out. You have the option of going to the local beach, a nearby swimming pool or just relaxing on the boat. Everything begins the next morning at about 10am.
(20NM) Enjoy a north westerly sail up the gulf and across to Sivota on the south east coast of Lefkas island. Verdant hillsides join seamlessly with rocky coves and sandy bays to create a picture postcard setting. The harbour is a sight to behold, with a small flotilla of colourful local fishing boats found lining the shore. Shops, tavernas, cafes and mini markets are all close by.
(5NM) A really easy day today, a short sail through the Meganisi channel to the captivating little harbour of Spartohorion Meganisi island. A late start and early finish. Pastel-coloured houses huddle on the clifftop over looking the deep blue bay below – where you happen to be moored up. Wander up the steps to the old village and discover another world and some brilliant tavernas. Great swimming, great food and quite simply heaven on earth. You’ll never want to leave here.
(8NM) Kastos is probably our favourite little place in the Ionian. Honestly, time has stood still here. An abundance of bays to anchor in along the way, perfect for snorkeling and exploring. Stern to on the quay if there’s space, if not a long line ashore. Grab a cocktail at the ‘Windmill’ and enjoy the sunset.
(12NM) Today we turn 180 degrees and head east. Around the foot of Kastos island, and we sail past the island of Atoko towards the famed home of Odysseus on the enchanting island of Ithaki. Kioni harbour is a real gem. The entrance is overlooked by three old windmills, and from here one sees the old village houses dotted on the hillsides behind the little port. The water is clear and there are four beaches within the bay itself, all with views across to the pastel coloured houses and surrounding olive groves.
(14NM) South, south, south we go dropping down and around the bottom of Ithaki. Nestled under the towering Mt Aenos lies Sami, the ancient capital of the whole area. A great little place with a brilliant bakery right there on the quay. It’s well worth the hike up the donkey trail to the ancient citadel for a knock out view of the Ionian.
(5NM) It’s such a short hop across the gulf to the final destination that a late start is on the cards. Today is a day for swimming, relaxing and soaking up the Ionian sunshine. You’ll need to be back in Ag. Efimia by about 4pm.
What do I need ?
To charter a yacht in Greece as part of a flotilla or independently you will need a qualified skipper on board, and a competent crew member. The ICC ( International Certificate of Competence ) is probably the best ticket to have as it is widely recognised by the authorities here on the islands. This, or the Day Skipper practical certificates are the minimum required.
We offer a pre-flotilla training week where you can gain an ICC as part of the holiday, have a look at our Learn to Sail holidays.
If you have an abundance of experience but no formal qualification there are many ICC test centers in the UK where you can get it all wrapped up in half a day, and get the ICC before your arrival in Greece.
flotilla sailing or yacht charter ?
Many of our previous Learn to Sail guests take the next step and further their sailing experience with a Flotilla holiday. This is for sailors who already have a practical sailing qualification and are looking for some continued support throughout their sailing holiday. Our friendly skipper and engineer are on board a lead yacht within the group. They will be on hand, and will get involved as much or as little as required depending on the groups ability and weather conditions. Normally there will be a morning briefing about the proposed passage and what to expect en route. The lead boat will meet you on arrival to help moor up. There are usually 2 free sailing days within the week.
Many guests complete a Sea-Trek Learn to Sail holiday, gain their ICC and then continue with a 2nd week on Flotilla.
This is for sailors who already have a practical sailing qualification and previous experience, and are keen to set off independently and discover new islands under their own steam, on exceptionally well maintained yachts and with our first class back up.
